It is widely accepted that 'races' don't exist. In 2003, the Human Genome Project confirmed that 99.9% of the genetic letters in humans are identical. Therefore the general consensus is that the concept of race is based on weak grounds.
However the important question is do we still go about our lives assuming that there are different racial groups in the world? Has the recent attempt to discourage the word 'race' and the emergence of ethnicity had any impact on the lives of Hafus? When we use the term ethnicity do we really only attribute it with cultural dimensions and therefore entail no reference to biological elements?
A lot of us would agree that the beauty of mixed race lies in its quality of challenging the concept of 'race' and its ability to bridge the gap between different cultures. However are we actually admitting to the false reality of the existence of 'pure races'? Should we not be celebrating the diversity? But what are we really talking about cultural diversity or ‘racial’ diversity? The exhibition attempts to provide a domain to think about these questions and give an insight into the lives of Hafus.
