There is a definite sense of mobilization, which stemmed from the need for a domain where Hafus could meet their kind – a very exciting but somewhat strange and familiar experience at the same time. The movement of Hafus is supported by the recent proliferation of online forums which often hold offline meetings across the globe: "Halvsie" which started at the end of 2003, now with 1400 members worldwide, and "Hapa Japan," established in 2004 and now with more than 1000 Japan-based members.
The creation of tens and hundreds of Hafu-related communities on social networking websites such as Mixi and even Myspace and Facebook is also mind-blowing, community names varying from “Half Japanese” (3000 members), "American Japanese Hafus", "Hafus who went to Japanese schools",and "Half-mixed blood”.
The influx of such groups were formed out of necessity -the need for a tangible community to belong to, where Hafus can meet people with similar backgrounds and to share experiences.
